Gas Central Heating Wellington – Ducted Warm Air or Radiators
Warm air heating has been around a long time. The Romans used to heat their floors by lighting a fire at one end of the building and putting a flue at the other end, and allowing the hot air to run under the floor heating the floor. Central heating systems have changed now. We install ducting under the floor, with different materials, and there is a thermostat now.
We offer gas central heating Wellington wide. We maintain most brands and recommend brands that have good service histories and which have low running costs. At Southern, we offer efficient and cost-effective gas central heating services, including installation and repairs in Lower Hutt, Petone and Wellington. Gas central heating systems play a major role in your home, providing warmth and comfort when it’s cold outside. But they can also be an expensive investment, so you need to make sure they are installed properly by an experienced team.
Warm Air Ducted Central Heating
Warm air ducted central heating is a highly efficient and popular method of heating homes and buildings. This system utilizes a network of ducts that distribute heated air throughout the space, ensuring consistent warmth and comfort. A central heating unit, such as a furnace or heat pump, heats the air and then pushes it through the ductwork to various rooms or zones. The ducts are strategically placed in walls, floors, or ceilings to deliver warm air where it is needed most. This method offers several advantages, including rapid heating, even distribution of heat, and the ability to control individual zones’ temperature. Additionally, warm air ducted central heating can be integrated with air conditioning systems for year-round climate control. It is a reliable and energy-efficient solution that provides cozy and consistent heating throughout the entire property.
Hot water Boiler Radiator Central Heating
Hot water boiler radiator central heating systems are a highly effective and popular method for providing warmth and comfort to homes and buildings. These systems consist of a central boiler that heats water and circulates it through a network of pipes to radiators located in various rooms. The radiators, typically made of cast iron or steel, release heat into the surrounding space, warming it up efficiently. The hot water is then returned to the boiler to be reheated and circulated again, creating a continuous cycle of warmth throughout the building. This type of central heating offers several advantages, including consistent and controllable heat distribution, energy efficiency, and the ability to zone different areas for customized comfort. Additionally, boiler-based systems can often be integrated with other heating sources, such as solar panels or heat pumps, further enhancing their sustainability and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Overall, hot water boiler radiator central heating is a reliable and effective solution for achieving optimal indoor comfort in residential and commercial settings.
What are the Types of Central Heating?
Central heating is usually of two types either hot water or warm air. This means sending hot air to grills or hot water to radiators from a central boiler or furnace. Some hot water systems also generate domestic hot water as well. This is not common in New Zealand. Most homes are retrofitted so they already have a domestic water heater such as Rinnai Infinity or an electric storage tank. The combi systems are much more expensive so it is not so economical to ditch the existing hot water heating system.
How Does Central Heating Work?
The occupant selects the desired temperature and the times the central heating will turn on usually in the mornings before getting up. The central heating can be turned off if required or let it go on if the temperature drops below that desired temperature. Central heating is a good choice for unpredictable weather conditions like in Wellington. Ducted gas heating is well known for most buildings.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Central Heating
Central heating usually heats the entire building. For warm air, there are systems to close off areas such as Zone 1, Zone 2 and so on. These zones often refer to rooms of the house. With water radiators you can close off each room and put rooms on thermostats. Spot heating is a single gas fire or electric heating that heats that area or room.
Buildings that have low insulation like no double glazing, there is high heat loss in central heating. Spot heating may be better where the heater is a radiant type.
Most old homes are not insulated because the insulation was not required as a Building code requirement in past years. Central heating is a good option if you want to control the heating level or temperature in your entire home. It is also good if you spend most of your time at home. You can set a time and temperature using a thermostat for central heating. Even though central heating is a good heating system, it can cost a lot more than you think. For free central heating recommendations, call Southern Plumbing on 0800 484 353.
Maintaining Central Heating Efficiency
It is important to have your central heating unit maintained yearly or twice yearly at the longest. Ducting can come apart and filters can be clogged. This can cause high energy bills. There can be different problems that you might face with your heating system. Cats love central heating ducting and often lay on it squashing the ducts till no air passes. Cats and rodents like scratching the ducting tearing the outer insulation, this often completely destroys the ducting. Check the ducting every season before winter. We also recommend checking flue and unit for rust and any other wear and tear. During our checks, we sometimes find outlets not working, disconnected ducting, frugal installers and more.
Recommended Efficiency Unit
Gas central heating units come in low, medium and high-efficiency units. It is important to use high-efficiency units where they are used a lot otherwise the gas bills will be high. It pays to buy the 6 Star units.
We service different central heating brands like Vulcan, Braemar, Rinnai, Brivis, and more.

Furnaces are available in three different efficiency levels, such as low, medium and high. If you want a cheap furnace choose low efficiency system but it has higher running costs and installation.

Wall Radiators Central Heating
This type of central heating requires the radiators to fit on the walls and piping run back to a boiler. The radiators are usually fitted on an outside wall under a window. Each radiator can have a thermostat and a shut-off valve. Wall radiators are designed keeping in mind the flexible heating options for homes. It is a typical preference for most people in New Zealand due to the changeable weather conditions. Radiators are good at reducing health hazards in the house. They are safe, silent and responsive. You don’t have to worry about children or pets around radiators.
Alternatives to Central Heating
Rinnai‘s new powerful Rinnai 1005 Energy Saver has an 8kw output for large rooms or you could put a heat transfer system to send heat to other rooms. Up to two other rooms in the case of a Rinnai 1004.
Customer:
Can I have a break down of the costs of gas central heating please.
Southern plumbing:
Furnace $ 5,478
Controller $805
Labour $2,750
Flue connections, install kit, gas connection pipe, gas certificate, duct connection, clips, Sealants. $950
Flue $1,297 and cable to controller
GST $1,772
Total $13,592
Customer:
That’s very helpful. We are looking into electric radiators as an alternative option that would give us more flexibility re heating different parts of the house.
Southern Plumbing:
Ok the difference is 6 Star gas warm air furnace operates at about 14 cents per kw. Hot water radiators (gas) are similar. Electric Radiators are what your power supplier charges for electricity 23 cents is most common. In big rooms its gets hard as you often need about 3-4 kilowatts in a lounge, or hall and electricity struggles to do that usually only 2kw unless you buy something special. If you had them all on at once it would be a 37Amp draw on a power cable with the oven also at 30 Amps its more than the house can handle as the max is 60Amps.
This is why heat pumps are so popular at about 5-9 amps but only heating one room. or 12 Amps (larger model) for two rooms. There is Heat Pump central heating but that is even more expensive and has larger ducts but with a lower running cost than gas. at about 8 -12 cents a kw. depending on the in coming air temp.
Gas will not be running out in our lifetimes as it will be Hydrogen and or Biogas.
Summary:
The reason gas is used is due to cheaper running costs than electric. Heat pump can be cheaper to run if using heat pumps just doing one area. But to control bedroom you need Heat pump central heating then the install price jumps up.

Usually every two years. Some warranties are longer if there is proof of a 2 year service. Ensure furniture is not placed over the outlets and the inlet is free and open.
We have standard charges for servicing central heating that included checking the ducting and safety of the installation. A pressure test is done to ensure gas is not leaking.
We recommend servicing your central heating system at least once a year to ensure it operates efficiently and safely. Regular maintenance helps prevent breakdowns and prolongs the lifespan of your unit.

An emergency water tank is helpful in any kind of emergency. Whether it’s an earthquake emergency, or there is no water at home. You can use the stored water whenever you need it. The plastic used in the 200L emergency water tank is both Food Contact and Water Potable complaint. The water tank comes with a brass hose tap. You can choose either a dark green or birch grey as per your likings.
AS/NZS 2070: Part 1 and Part 8 Australian Standards for Food Contact.
The Christchurch Emergency Water Experience
Christchurch had a series of large earthquakes that caused residents to have no water. It was days before a truck was available. A large water truck would go to each street and residents would carry water for their use. Some residents were elderly. How far can you carry 40 litres of water? And will you be home when the truck arrives?
Christchurch is flat. Wellington is not. It is also likely Wellington will be with out water for longer.
It is generally accepted you need about 3 litres per day per person. 2 litres for drinking and 1 litre for cooking. You will notice there is nothing for ablutions like washing your self or toilet. It is anticipated that to go to the toilet you will be digging a wee hole in the garden for #1’s and #2’s.
With careful management for two people in a dwelling this should last about 30 days. Of course by then you will be smelling pretty good and you will notice we have not mentioned washing any clothes or washing any dishes or cooking utensils or pots. If you have a pet they will need a similar amount.
There could be a problem with the neighbours who may not have a tank or any stored water and want some of your water. They may even take all of it.
You might get lucky and get some rain but do you have anything to collect it. If your tank is not connected to your spouting you will need some kind of tarpaulin and if you set it up with raised edges so it collects in the middle you will need a large container to store it or just collect it in the tarp itself and bail it out into your tank.
If you have a hot water storage tank and you have turned the heating off to it you may be able to drain it. Most tanks are about 135 to 180 litres. But in the case of all tanks you wont want to drink the bottom of the tanks as the water will contain a lot of mud or rotting material.
How do I ensure my water is safe to drink?
Water stored in a water tank can go bad. Specially it if has warmed with the sun over several days or weeks. Bacteria loves warm water.
When you are ready to drink it simply put some bleach into the tank ands stir it around and leave it for while to do its job. Bleach kills most nasties. One teaspoon of 8% bleach per 60 litres and leave for 30 minutes after stirring it well.
What if I have no bleach. Take the water out of the container you have and put it into a bucket and leave in the direct sun for 30 minutes stirring well every 5 minutes. It must be direct sun beaming straight into the bucket as we are relying on the UV in sunlight to kill the bugs. If unsure leave it all day or put it into a dishes tarp so it gets a lot of sun.
Another safer option is to boil it.
Another option is set up some kind of system to evaporate the water and condense it and run that water down a slope into a container. Bleach and boiling are the best options the others are if you are desperate.
On average a household of 4 people (2 adults and 2 children) consume 900L of water per day.
Recent studies have shown that if Wellington has a large earthquake, it could take up to 100 days to reconnect the water supply. In Christchurch, it took some suburbs 3 years to reconnect their water supply.
Wellington’s 3 water supply plants have pipes crossing three fault lines, this means that in a large event the pipes could damaged.
The areas most affected by this are Karori and Miramar as they are farthest away from the 3 water supplies.
We consume water daily without realizing the quantity we consume. We use water for washing our hands, taking shower, drinking, washing dishes, cooking, preparation of food e.g. washing vegetables, cleaning and many other things. Do you have enough 1L and 2L bottles of water to last you for 100 days?
Solution Install Emergency Water Storage Tanks Wellington
Local water tanks Wellington
The Tank Guy provides us NZ made water tanks. The water tanks are made from UV 8 plastic, produced keeping in mind the New Zealand weather conditions. The barrel circular design was created as water is heavy and bulges out of the sides and when this happens the tank is able to expand.
The tanks must be installed on an even base that has plain surface and is free from rocks and stones. This is done to safeguard the water storage tank from being damaged. It also needs to be installed next to a down pipe which will fill the tank with rain water.
Our plumbing team can install water storage tanks Wellington for all your emergency needs. Recently, Wellington residents were urged to at least have 20L of water per person, per day for seven days (140L per person) for any emergencies. Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (Wremo) regional manager Jeremy Holmes said “We are expecting to see tighter water restrictions in 2024 so now is the time for people to store emergency water and replenish the supplies they already have while restrictions still allow.”

200 Litre Emergency Tanks
If you have a flat space within 500mm of a downpipe. This tank is only for the basics drinking only. It may need to be boiled or treated with a small amount of bleach. You can read more on water storage tank special deal.
What to do with All the Collected Water?
Using town supply water to wash your house and car is wasting expensive treated water. It is far more efficient to use rainwater. We can fit a pump to the tank and you can use that water to wash things, water the garden, etc. We can also pump the water to flush toilets and to wash clothes.
How to Reduce Your Water Bill?
When installing a large tank and you have sufficient roof area to avoid the tanks over flowing you can divert some of the water to flush the toilets or fill the washing machine or run the water to hose taps for car washing and garden irrigation.
Tank sizes go from 200 litre up to 30,000 litres in domestic sizes so we have a tank to fit all occasions. We can also put a series of smaller tanks together to fit a small space and join them together. Tanks have been used for many years on rural situations for both humans and animals. Tank water for human consumption may require treatment with water purification tablets or adding a small quantity of bleach will kill bacteria and viruses.
Emergency Water and Tank Water Purification
There are many types of filters for removing solids and harmful things in water needed for drinking. Filters of 1 micron or less will take out protozoa and bleach will kill viruses and bacteria. We can also install Ultra Violet water treatment which also kills harmful growths in water.
How long can you or your garden survive with out water?
You just might need some Emergency water whether its due to an earthquake or Water restrictions a ready source of tank water can be a life saver either for you or your garden.
It is an anticipation that if Wellington gets a big earthquake, it might result in spending around 80-90 days without water. This kind of water crisis was faced in Christchurch. It required the residents to fetch water from tankers at the end of the street, or else where after streets were cleared of debris to allow their cars to get it. Wellington has had earthquakes before and the effects of those earthquakes are well documented and are similar to the earthquakes in Christchurch.
It’s better to put an emergency water source in place before it happens, you can’t get insurance after the disaster takes place. Installing an emergency water source is not as expensive as it may sound. Some people recommend keeping 20 litres for immediate consumption but it is not enough. Assuming a family of four, Wellington Regional Council’s recommendation is 200 litres per house. This would give you 5o litres covering four days. Which is not a lot. So that’s like 12.5 litres per day.
We can supply and install a 200 litre tank next to your downpipe on level ground for $401.74 including GST. Check our emergency water storage tank deal here.
This is about the same price as buying the water at the supermarket. The water needs boiling or treating before drinking. If the ground is not leveled, we can put down a concrete tile to level the base for a small extra cost.
We have a limited supply of tanks at this price. You can contact us for a quick installation as they might not last long at this exclusive price. The tanks come complete with child-proof lids, hose taps, and a level connection to the downpipe within 300mm. We can run piping a lot further for an extra cost.

Will Gas Still be around in the Future?
Although there is a lot of talk about gas running out this is not true for the domestic market which uses about 1.5% of the gas used in NZ. There will always be gas in one form or the other. Biogas is on the up and we discharge a lot to the atmosphere which can be used for the residential market.
In late 2025 gas was still about half electricity at 17c verses 28-30c for electricity.
Although heat pumps work in cold weather sometimes below zero their efficiency drops a lot they can get to less than 1:1 in very cold weather but to beat gas their efficiency has to get to more than 1.9. Gas furnaces can also deliver 32kW almost immediately. Heat pumps take a while to heat up and you need a massive heat pump to deliver it. So the heat pumps have to be on long before you enter the space.
Talk to our Seatoun gas fitters who also know a lot about electric systems too. For instance we can talk to you about swapping your gas cook top to an induction hob.
If you want to shift to electric heating give us a call we have many solutions.
