Are you looking for central heater installers in Wellington? If yes, then you’re at the right place! Our team has been installing radiator central heating in Wellington for around 40 years. The central heating radiators are smaller for the same output, and boilers can be wall-mounted. They are efficient and cost-effective. Natural gas is the most common method of heating water in radiators. Radiator central heating systems compete effectively with other types of heating systems, including heat pumps. They can control heating a particular room. The other kinds of heating systems cannot do this. This reduces running costs, especially for houses that are not insulated well.
Is Gas Powered Central Heating Relevant in our Electric World?
Yes very much so. Heat Pumps struggle with large spaces. Unless you have two very large domestic heat pumps even they will struggle to heat a large home on a cold day. When the temperature drops so does heat pump efficiency. The 14kW rating of a heat pump may drop to 10kW but to heat your home quickly it needs 30kW. Now what …. The house will heat slowly. Or you will have to install 3 large heat pumps.

What is the difference between Radiators and Warm Air Central Heating?
Central heating as a form of heating is more expensive than spot heating. Heating one or two rooms is more efficient than heating the whole building when no one is using the rest of it. The radiator central heating system can control different rooms one at a time. It uses a control valve or thermostat. You can zone warm air central heating. There is a limit to how many outlets can operate with warm air central heating usually 2 or 3 zones. With radiators, you can heat only one room. There is less heat loss with the piping compared to the ducting, and less pet damage. The boilers are easy to service.
Servicing of Central Heating Radiators
Radiators should be serviced every two years at least and for best results every year. Servicing should cover the entire system including the radiators, the piping, and the boiler. The water in the system should be treated and topped up and the system bled of air. The insulation piping, boiler, and the gas piping must be checked and tested.

What about the Radiators themselves?
The radiators come in all shapes and sizes and can be from a variety of suppliers. Most are steel, and some are aluminium, which is more expensive. They contain water with a corrosion inhibitor which is heated. There are ladder-like radiators for bathrooms; some have summer mode. It is also connected to electricity the same way as a heated towel rail.
There are different models and sizes of radiator boilers. The boiler is selected by the gas fitter based on the size of the building to be heated and whether it is inside or outside. The boilers are also selected based on price, and they differ in price based on size; internal or external and the efficiency rating of the boiler. Some radiator boiler models are condensing, and some are not. The condensing models are more expensive and less costly to run.
Boiler sizes run from 20kW to 50kW for domestic boilers. Commercial boilers are much bigger. Gas boilers can heat very large areas where heat pumps struggle and need additional power cables run to the building.
Boiler Improvements over the years
Boilers have improved their efficiency from 60% to over 90% which are called condensing boilers where most of the heat has been removed from the flue gases. This means less gas is used and therefore has a lower CO2 discharge into the atmosphere. This is done using larger heat exchangers. Some models required a condensate drain is run outside for internal units and if internal units have long flues the flue has a condensate drain also. This is due to half the products of combustion being water vapour which is now condensing into water.
How does a Radiator Heating System Work
The system is always full of water. The thermostat or controller is installed in the hallway. When the temperature falls below the set temperature, the boiler heats water; and it is sent to the radiators. You can set time and days as well. If you do not require a radiator, you can turn it off. You can also turn off the whole radiator central heating system with the controller.
Radiator Servicing
Every two years, a radiator central heating system water pressure need checking, and the unit needs cleaning. The water contains a corrosion inhibitor which may need topping up.

Looking for best water filter system in Wellington?
At Southern, we supply and install a wide range of filtration systems to suit your needs – whether it’s a simple Brita filter, Puretec water filtration, an under sink filtration system, or a whole house water filter. Enjoy clean, safe, and great tasting water from every tap in your home.
Why Choose a Water Filter System for Your Home?
Clean, Safe, Great-Tasting Water for Your Home or Business
Access to clean, healthy water is essential for every Wellington household. Over time, local supply lines can introduce sediment, chlorine, rust, micro-plastics, chemical residues, and unpleasant tastes or odours into your drinking water. A professionally installed water filter removes these contaminants and gives you consistently clear, great-tasting water straight from the tap.
Southern Plumbing & Gasfitting Ltd installs, replaces, and services a full range of water filtration systems across Wellington. Whether you need a simple under-bench filter for daily drinking water, or a whole-house system to protect appliances and improve water quality everywhere in your home, we supply and fit solutions built for Wellington’s water conditions.
Why Install a Filter in Wellington?
✔ Improve Water Taste and Odour
Chlorine and naturally occurring minerals can leave a metallic or chemical taste. A filter instantly improves the flavour and smell of your water.
✔ Remove Sediment and Rust
Old galvanised pipes and council mains sometimes release fine sediments. Filters prevent these particles entering your taps, fixtures, and appliances.
✔ Reduce Household Health Concerns
Proper filtration reduces contaminants such as:
Chlorine and chloramines
Lead and heavy metals
Microplastics
Sand and silt
Organic compounds
Bacteria (with UV systems)

✔ Protect Appliances and Plumbing
Filtered water extends the life of your hot water cylinder, washing machine, dishwasher, and tapware by reducing mineral buildup and sediment.
✔ Whole-Home or Single-Tap Solutions Available
From affordable cartridge filters to advanced multi-stage systems, you choose how much of your home is protected.
Our Water Filtration Services
Under-Bench Water Filters
Compact and efficient. Ideal for kitchens where you want clean drinking and cooking water straight from the tap.
Whole-House Filtration Systems
A whole house filter system is the most comprehensive solution for improving the water quality throughout your entire home. Instead of filtering water at a single tap, a whole house system treats every drop as it enters your property. This means cleaner water for drinking, bathing, cooking, laundry, cleaning, and for protecting valuable appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, hot water cylinders, and tapware.
In Wellington, whole house systems are particularly beneficial because older supply lines, ageing council mains, and varying water conditions can introduce sediment, rust flakes, chlorine, and other impurities into your household plumbing. These contaminants not only affect taste but can also cause scale buildup, staining, corrosion, and premature wear on fixtures and appliances. A professionally installed whole house system provides consistent water clarity and protects the long-term health of your plumbing.
Sediment – Carbon Filter – UV Unit
The system usually begins with a sediment pre-filter, capturing sand, silt, rust, and fine debris. This prevents blockages and extends the life of downstream filters and appliances. The next stage often uses a carbon filter, which removes chlorine, chemical residues, odours, and unpleasant tastes. For households using rainwater, bore water, or rural supplies, an optional UV sterilisation unit can be added to neutralise bacteria and biological contaminants without chemicals, ensuring safe and clean water for every use.
Installing a whole house water filter is also a practical way to safeguard your hot water system. Sediment and mineral buildup inside cylinders and heat exchangers can reduce efficiency, shorten service life, and create maintenance issues. By filtering water before it reaches these appliances, you improve performance and reduce long-term running costs.
A well-designed system also benefits your daily comfort. Showering with filtered water helps reduce skin dryness and irritation caused by chlorine and other chemicals. Fixtures and glass showers stay cleaner for longer, with fewer mineral stains and scale deposits. Laundry comes out softer, brighter, and free from pipe residue.
Southern Plumbing & Gasfitting Ltd supplies, installs, and services whole house systems tailored to Wellington’s specific water characteristics. Our technicians ensure correct flow rates, pressure compatibility, and high-quality filter media so your system performs efficiently at all times. We also provide scheduled filter replacements to keep your water consistently fresh and safe.
For households wanting reliable, clean water everywhere in the home, a whole house filter system is a long-term investment that improves comfort, protects assets, and enhances overall water quality.

Water Filtration Options for Your Family
We offer a variety filter systems for homes in Wellington, from top international brands to proven local solutions.
Under Sink Water Filters
Compact and efficient, an under sink water filter is perfect for kitchens. Choose a Brita water filter or Puretec system for cleaner, better-tasting water straight from your tap.
Under sink filters are a discreet and highly effective way to enjoy clean, great-tasting water straight from your kitchen tap. Installed beneath the sink, these systems filter out chlorine, sediment, rust, and other common tap water contaminants without taking up precious counter space.
They’re ideal for families who want high-quality drinking water without the hassle of jug filters or bottled water. Puretec’s under sink models are compact, low-maintenance, and feature easy-to-replace cartridges — perfect for daily use and peace of mind.
Whole House Water Filtration Systems
Treat all the water entering your home with a whole house model. Ideal for reducing chlorine, sediment, and heavy metals across all taps, showers, and appliances.
These systems are quite tall so you need about 1.5m under the floor to install and service them. The filters need changing periodically. It is helpful to install the filter near the water supply. You can spec what kinds of chemicals you want removed from the water or put a high level model at the sink. We recommend 1 micron filters for the sink to remove giardia and other similar bugs.
Whole house filters provide clean, filtered water to every tap in your home — not just the kitchen. These systems are installed at the point where water enters your home, ensuring that bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, and even outdoor taps deliver high-quality, filtered water.
They’re ideal for homes on tank water or in areas with hard or chlorinated water. A Puretec whole house system can reduce scale, sediment, chlorine, and harmful chemicals, helping to protect your plumbing, appliances, and skin.
Tap Water Filters
Easy to install, tap filters are a simple, budget-friendly option. Great for renters or small households.
Sink models are a convenient solution for improving water quality directly at your sink. These attach directly to your existing tap or can be installed with a separate filter and tap. They’re a great entry-level option for renters or those looking for an affordable, quick-to-install solution.
Puretec’s tap filters come in a range of styles — from DIY models to professionally installed options — and are great for removing unpleasant taste and odour, chlorine, and other common tap water contaminants.
There are different filter specs depending on what you want to remove.

Looking for the best water filter system for your home? Talk to the experts at Southern Plumbing. We’ll assess your water supply, recommend the right water filtration system, and install it for you – hassle-free.
The best water filter system for home use depends on your water source and needs. For general tap water improvement, a Brita water filter or under sink water filter is a popular choice. If you want filtered water throughout your entire home, consider a whole house water filtration system like those from Puretec or Davey.
While Wellington’s tap water meets safety standards, it can still contain chlorine, sediment, and minerals that affect taste and clarity. A tap water filter or home water filtration system can remove these impurities and improve water quality.
It depends on the system and usage. Most Brita filters and tap filters require replacement every 2–3 months. Under sink water filters may last 6–12 months, while whole house water filters usually need servicing annually. We can provide reminders or schedule regular maintenance.
Yes, a whole house water filtration system filters all incoming water, protecting plumbing, appliances, and your skin from chlorine and sediment. It’s ideal for families or homes with high water usage.
Start by assessing your water quality, usage needs, and budget. We can test your water and recommend the right water filter system for your home – whether it’s a tap filter, under sink filter, or whole house system.
Low shower pressure is a common problem for households. In New Zealand, a large number of old homes have old fashioned hot water systems. Poor shower pressure is caused by many issues, often more than one. If you have a low-pressure hot water system, you need 20mm copper pipework to the shower mixer for best results. If the installer has used smaller plastic piping the shower will suffer if the supply pressure is low.
What is low shower pressure or a low pressure hot water heater?
Low pressure refers to the type of hot water system that you have. Low pressure hot water heaters are made from copper most often, and some are available in steel. The maximum pressure rating is usually 7.6m of head or 76kPa. Some hot water heaters have less than this head of water resulting in very low shower pressure. We have solutions to this problem.
Methods to improve low shower pressure in your home
There are several methods to improve low shower pressure in your home:
Replace the piping with larger bore piping. This is effective but will only give minimally more water at the shower it it was piped too small.
Change the shower mixer – This will cost approx. $800 – 1900 approximately depending if the wall lining has to come off. Most times it does not.
Change the low-pressure cold to the shower to mains pressure. Change the shower mixer to unequal from equal low pressure. Typically, a Topless brand shower mixer or even a pair of taps if really old. It will help in getting hot water from the hot water cylinder. This will cost approx. $800 – $1900.
Change the shower rose. Cost approx. $350 -650. There are some great shower roses. The rose must not be a variable flow type. Check which one will solve the problem, for expert advice contact us.
Change the method of supplying water to the shower. You can change to being fed with a pressure reducing valve with an open vent for approx. $2800 – $3800. Usually better to upgrade to high pressure.
Fit a booster pump – Fitting a booster pump will improve your shower pressure for $1400-2600. approx.
Change low pressure hot water system to valve vented for $ 3485 – $3900 approx. Replace hot water cylinder with a medium pressure or a high-pressure type approx. $4200 – $5600.
Change hot water cylinder to a different system, e.g. gas continuous flow. Approx. $4500 – $6000. Link to our hot water cylinder page.
Change to heat pump water heater for $9000 to $12 000 approx. Depends on how far the cable runs . This must be outside or in a very well-ventilated area such as a carport or under the house if room allows.
All the suggestions above will give a better shower. We just need to work out which would be most effective.
If you are consistently facing problem with your shower pressure then get in touch with our professional and certified plumbers in Wellington. We can fix low shower pressure with various options. We can also help you increase shower pressure in your bathroom. Call our certified plumbers for improving the performance of your shower on 0800 484 353.
What is High Pressure or Mains Pressure?
We Make Changes to the shower system to improve the shower experience.
Change the shower rose and or hose.
Remove any blockages and restrictions.
Fit larger bore piping to the shower mixer.
Put high pressure on the cold side and fit a good mixer we know works.
Upgrade the hot water system to High pressure.
Piping to low pressure showers should be in copper piping. Not plastic unless large bore eg 25mm inside diameter.
High Pressure or Mains Pressure refers to the rating of the tank. High-pressure tanks are capable of around 1000 kPa; not many are set at this pressure because an installation requirement is to put a pressure limiting valve on the line restricting the pressure to 500 kPa. This is still higher than low pressure at 76 kPa. Mains Pressure is a term used years ago before limiting valves were installed in tanks.
Poor shower flow is sometimes because of a water tank mounted on the hot water cylinder or in the roof, a pressure reducing valve might be installed on the hot water cylinder with a short vent pipe.
Can I use a High or Mains Pressure Shower Mixer on a Low Pressure Hot Water System?
No, the high-pressure shower mixer has small ports for reducing the flow of water. A low-pressure shower mixer has large ports for getting as much water as possible to the shower. We change out any mixers that are wrong or too restrictive for models that have assistance from the cold side and change that to high pressure.
Call us now to determine if there are any faults with the current hot water system. We will check for faulty supply tank, faulty mixer or rose, blocked pipes, etc. We will find all kinds of obstructions in pipes and mixers, insects, rubber washers, and whatever comes through the water supply.
Upgrade your shower experience with a better shower head. There are different high-pressure shower heads that ensure a revitalizing cascade of water that soothe tired muscles, creating a spa-like ambiance in the comfort of your own bathroom. If you’re eco-conscious, then you can install water-saving shower heads which offer a sustainable solution without compromising on the luxurious feel. For added convenience, you can also install handheld shower head which will provide flexibility, allowing you to direct the flow exactly where you need it. Elevate your daily routine with diverse of shower heads for your preferences while promoting water conservation.

Leaks, Moss and Gutter Care
Most Wellington roofs don’t need replacement — they need the right maintenance at the right time. Catch it early and you’ll add 10–15 years to the roof you’ve already got.
Leak investigation — water ingress rarely shows up directly above where it enters. We trace it properly rather than chase stains.
All repair work is guaranteed to last 15+ years in line with the NZ Building Code.
Steep Roofs? Tricky Access? No Problem.
Wellington’s hills mean a lot of our work sits on pitches above 25 degrees, or on sites where a scaffold truck can’t reach the driveway. We have three access systems in rotation:
SARNZ-compliant scaffolding for full re-roofs and long maintenance jobs
Rope access for quick repairs on steep or awkward sites — safer and cheaper than scaffolding on a half-day job
Cherry picker hire for single-side or chimney access
Edge protection, fall arrest and working-at-heights supervision come standard. Aerial photography and drone mapping available for quoting.
Commercial Roofing Wellington
Factory, sports complex, school, university, supermarket, hotel — we re-roof and maintain them all. Commercial work gets the same fixed-price quoting, the same licensed team, and after-hours access so your tenants or staff aren’t disrupted.

Butynol flat-roof systems and membrane repairs
Planned-maintenance contracts with annual inspection reports

Why Hire Southern for Your Roof
Roofing is the one trade where a cheap quote usually costs the most. Here’s what you get with Southern:
Fixed-price quotes — written before work starts, honoured when it finishes
Yes — even a hairline crack will let water through once it’s driven by Wellington southerlies. We stock matching concrete, terracotta and pressed-metal tiles and can swap individual tiles or re-point a full ridge line. See roof repairs.
Straight quotes are free — a full replacement, new spouting, a skylight install. Complex leak-hunting jobs where we have to access the roof and water-test are charged as a diagnostic call-out, credited against the repair if you proceed.
Leak investigations are quoted case-by-case because access, roof type and how hidden the entry point is all change the price. Most jobs land between $350 and $800 for a full trace-and-report. See roof leak specialists.
Yes — removing a disused chimney while the scaffolding is already up is far cheaper than doing it later. We make good the structure, flashing and roof skin in matching material. See chimney removal.
The NZ Building Code requires repairs to last at least 15 years — and that’s our benchmark. Most of our repair work significantly outlasts that when combined with regular maintenance.
Yes — SARNZ-compliant scaffolding for full re-roofs, rope access for quick repairs, cherry-picker hire for chimney and single-side work. Pitches above 25 degrees get specialist roof ladders and fall-arrest as standard.
