Wellington winters aren’t kind to under-heated homes. Strong southerlies, high wind chill, and older housing stock mean the difference between a warm house and a miserable one is often the heating system — not the temperature outside.
Southern has been installing home heating across Wellington since 1982 — gas, radiator central, heat pump, solid fuel, solar. 40+ years, ~29,000 jobs. We help you pick the right system for your home layout, insulation level, and running-cost budget.
Call 0800 484 353 for a free on-site assessment.
What Heats a Wellington Home Best?
There’s no single best answer — it depends on your layout, your gas connection, your insulation, and your running-cost tolerance. Here’s the rough map:
Gas central heating — ducted warm air across the whole house, fast response, great for open-plan
Heat pumps — cheapest per-kWh, works best in well-insulated spaces
Wood burners and pellet stoves — cheap fuel, great radiant heat for one living area
Electric panel and radiant heaters — bedroom top-up only; expensive for whole-home heating
We’ll walk through your place and tell you what actually makes sense.
Gas Central & Radiator Heating
Central heating is the quiet upgrade that transforms a cold Wellington house. You walk in the door, every room is warm — no shuffling heaters between spaces.
Radiant heating is usually the best heating system for both commercial spaces and larger homes — quiet, even, and no dust circulation.
We design, supply and install end-to-end. Certifying Gasfitter on staff for sign-off.
Heat Pumps, Wood Burners & Pellet Stoves
Not every home suits central heating. For single-zone or tight-budget installs, there are still great options:
High-wall and ducted heat pumps — lowest running cost per kWh, Mitsubishi and other name-brand supply
Wood burners — unbeatable radiant warmth, cheap fuel, full flue and compliance work
Pellet stoves — automated fuel feed, thermostat-controlled, cleaner than a log burner
Gas fires and energy-saver heaters — Rinnai and similar
We also handle chimney removal if you’re decommissioning an old fireplace to free up space for a new system.
Heat or Insulate — What Comes First?
Short answer — insulate first. A $10,000 heat pump in a leaky villa will cost you more over 10 years than a $4,000 heat pump in a well-insulated house. The maths is brutal:
$500/month heating cost × 6 months = $3,000/year. Over 3 years, $9,000. Good insulation typically pays for itself in 5–6 years and then saves you money every winter after that.
We’ll tell you during the site visit if there’s obvious insulation work worth doing before you commit to a heating system. Wellington’s wind chill factor means you need to insulate more than almost anywhere else in New Zealand.
Older Homes and Commercial Spaces
Older villas and bungalows: high ceilings, single-glazed windows, minimal underfloor insulation. A single heat pump won’t cut it. Radiator central heating or zoned ducted systems tend to work best — quiet, even, and you can heat only the rooms you’re using.
Commercial buildings: warehouses, retail, offices, workshops. Radiant gas heating is usually the most cost-effective answer for large open spaces because it heats people and surfaces directly, not cubic metres of air.
We design and install commercial heating systems across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Kapiti and Porirua — including after-hours installs to avoid trading disruption.
Why Southern for Home Heating
Most heating companies sell you one system and fit it. We have plumbers, gasfitters and electricians on staff, so we can fit whatever actually suits your house.
Certifying Gasfitter on staff — gas systems self-certified, no third-party wait
Licensed electricians in the same team — no subcontractor handoffs for heat pump wiring
Per kWh delivered, heat pumps usually win. But in a leaky older home, a well-insulated wood burner can beat a heat pump on running cost. For whole-home warmth, gas or electric radiator central heating is often the cheapest long-term once insulation is sorted.
Depends on layout. Open-plan with 1–2 zones — heat pumps are simpler and cheaper. Multi-bedroom villa with separate living areas — central heating or radiators will be more comfortable and similar running cost.
Almost always, yes. Heating a poorly-insulated Wellington house is like boiling water in a colander. Ceiling and underfloor insulation typically pays for itself in 5–6 years, and every heating system works better afterwards.
Yes — boiler servicing, radiator balancing, heat pump filter cleans, flue sweeps, gas-system safety checks. Annual service usually picks up issues before they become expensive.
It is important to know the type of guttering on your building. New Zealand’s climate can be rough for some of the spouting and guttering materials. Gutter and spouting systems are available in various materials and styles. You can choose the right gutter system style from the list below. The materials for guttering and spouting may vary depending on the type of gutter you choose.
Types of Guttering Wellington Spouting:
Quarter Round
Old Gothic (O.G.)
Fascia Gutter 125mm Box Gutter
Half Round
J Line
Available Guttering and Spouting Materials:
Galvanised
Zincalume

Getting high-quality gutter system is recommended for residential and commercial properties. Our expert roofers can install the gutter system with gutter angles, gutter clips, sumps, downpipes, stop ends, gutter brackets, gutter mitres, fascia, and rainheads.
How to decide the gutter size?
Some of the things we consider is roof are. Most domestic residences will have a domestic profile and the profile will handle 100 to 200 sqm of roof area which a house has. If you have a commercial roof then we calculate roof area and design the gutter size. Other things we take into consideration is the height of the spouting and how exposed it is to the weather. When really high we choose to put more support with gutter brackets to ensure it does not fail high up as this is more expensive to rectify so we put more support there. Some metal spouting does not do so well when really exposed. Internal gutters on commercial buildings can be very large and require large rain heads that are hand made to order. Call us today with your requirements. 0800 HUGE LEAK
Down pipes in the wrong place. For example a non plumber will put downpipes where there are no drains to take the storm water this is due to impoper fall in the spouting.
Lack of maintenance. This causes blocked storwater drains and when gutters and spouting over flows sometimes water runs under the building.
Selecting the right colours for your bathroom can have a great impact on the space and design of your bathroom. The bathroom is cluttered with basin, showers or baths, towel rails, cabinets and more. Bathroom paint colour helps in defining the style and aesthetic you want in your bathroom.
Bathroom Vent Fan
If your bathroom is in a closed space, adding a ventilation fan will be very useful. Having proper ventilation in the bathroom is required by some of the building compliance codes. Building code may define the vent fan requirements and recommendations. It is important to check them before adding, changing or removing a ventilation fan.
The bathroom vent fan is helpful in removing warm or moist air, keep the bathroom door free, reduce the growth of mold, etc. Moisture is also responsible for damaging doors, wall paint, wallboard, etc.
Mini Trash Can
Instead of using a big bin in your bathroom, you can choose a smaller bin. You will save space and the bathroom will not look cluttered.
Wall-Mounted Towel Bar
Installing wall-mounted towel bar helps in utilising the space on the wall and it also adds an element to the wall. It is an easy addition to the bathroom’s style.
Storage Solutions
It gets difficult to store things in a small bathroom. Having an organised storage area can be very helpful. You can utilise blocked empty spaces for storage purposes. For example, if you have space under the washbasin, stack small drawers to keep things. You can also keep a small cabinet underneath. If you have an empty area above the toilet, you can use the space to stack toilet paper.
Over-the-Door Organiser
Having an empty space above the bathroom door can be turned into a storage space. You can install a rack and keep baskets with things in it. You can also place a storage cabinet above the door.
Central heating systems supply heat to multiple rooms using a single unit. The heating can be circulated in various ways, such as through ceiling outlets, floor, wall outlets, radiator, etc.
Houses in New Zealand can become colder in winter due to lack of insulation. In such conditions, it is good to have central heating systems.
Central heating systems are good for families who have small children, elderly people or people who have a long-term illness.
Energy Efficient
Central heating systems are known for being more efficient than other methods of home heating. Energy generated by water is four times higher than the energy given by air. With central heating, the heat circulates temperature through a sealed system.
Savings
Using free-standing heaters or ductless systems are not as effective as a central heating system. Installing central heating system can be expensive. The initial installation costs can be recovered with long-term cost benefits.
Comfort
Using a fireplace, space heaters, oil heaters, fan heaters, etc., leave heat or cold spot. These also offer uneven distribution of heat. You can ensure evenly distributed heat across your home with a central heating system. This means you can comfortably host small or large gatherings on coldest evenings without a problem.
Safety
Central heating systems are ideal for families with small children and elderly people. There are no elements, wires or flames, which could be reached by the children or elderly. Thus, it is safe to have a central heating system and enjoy the cosiness of your home.
Temperature Control
Central heating systems can be controlled using thermostat. You can turn off heating in rooms which are not being used. You can also control temperature with the thermostat.
Call Southern for central heating system installation and maintenance services in Wellington on 0800 484 353.
Upgrading your bathroom does not mean completely changing your bathroom. You can make small changes and it can make a big impact on how your bathroom looks and feels.
Replace the Vanity
You can replace the vanity or revamp it with new paint, or even change the drawer handles; these can bring a clean new look to your bathroom. The vanity drawer handles can complement the colour and style of your bathroom taps, and other fixtures. For example, if your tap is black, you can change the handles to black as well.
Changing the type of vanity can have an impact as well. Wall mounting the vanity can create the illusion of more floor space.
Taps and Other Fixtures
Installing new fixtures can make an impactful difference to the style of your bathroom. You can upgrade from an old rustic tap to a new style tap. Changing your taps are in the bathroom can also add a little spark to your bathroom. Wall-mounted taps are in trend. You can choose new styles of taps, towel bars and drawer handles. Black, brass and chrome are few metal finishes loved by people these days.
Change Door Style
A door can make a difference in the layout of your bathroom. Usually, the door opening area is dead space. You can utilise this space by upgrading to a sliding door.
Remove the tub
If you have a bathtub and no one uses it, then why not get rid of it. A bathtub can take up excess space, which can be easily used to house a shower and add storage or space to your bathroom.
Creatively Convert Your Windows
Often small bathrooms don’t have enough space to put a mirror. You can use the window to hang a mirror in front of. It is a creative way of using space and adding a new idea to your bathroom.
The modern hotel bathroom is no longer just a bathroom. It is an extension of the living space. With the rise of the stay-cation and an ever-busier world, it is a haven of well-being and relaxation. It can make or break a guest’s stay.
You may think that upgrading bathrooms is too expensive, but on the contrary, it is a proven way to improve your business. A study conducted by Cornell University in 2017 shows that guests reviewed bathrooms negatively. A good bathroom renovation is a long term investment that will benefit your business in many ways. This includes adding value to your motel, increasing life-long customers and minimising the risk of “lost future earningsâ€.
Here are a few ways we can help you to make your bathroom cost-effective and stylish.
Make it easy to clean
Simple yet efficient bathrooms are easier to clean. Faster cleaning means lower cleaning costs. Potentially we could take 5 minutes off the cleaning time of each bathroom. At a Motel with 40 bathrooms that means over 23 hours a week, you have saved in cleaning labour. Over the span of a year, you spend approximately $21,228 on cleaning bathrooms.
Let us help you move from an old-fashioned bathroom to modern bathroom design.
Keep it simple – Basic is more
Equip your guest’s bathroom with the necessary amenities only. Not only are fewer appliances less costly to install, there are fewer things to maintain. It will help in keeping the bathroom clean and low maintenance.
Current bathroom trends in the accommodation market are mainly based around minimalism, clean lines and open space.
Water Flow Rate
When you calculate the amount of hot water used by each guest, it comes out to be a huge quantity. This does not mean that the heated water is used completely.
To save money and energy, we recommend checking the hot water cylinder, and tapware for efficiencies, i.e., piping and cylinder insulation, leaking joints, hot water temperature, etc.
Value for the Money
Functional yet stylish bathrooms are a treat for all customers.
It will increase the value of the room and your motel business. Make it feel like an up-sell. The quality feel of the bathroom will enhance your client’s stay. You can integrate new technology to make bathrooms fancier and allow guests to enjoy something they may not experience at home. In return, this could increase repeat business. Customers might return again and again to your motel due to high-quality services.
Go Eco-Friendly
Use reusable bathroom toiletries dispenser for shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Using reusable dispensers, you create less rubbish, need less restocking and less storing. This also helps in using lesser packaged goods, which means you can keep the packaging consumption to a minimum as well.
Bathrooms are important to travellers in similar way bedrooms are, the demand for the ratio of a bedroom to a bathroom is changing. Many hotels are taking creative steps towards making their small bathrooms more spacious. (USA Today)
We have previous experience in motel bathrooms and understand that precision and efficiencies are important. The longer we are there, the longer a paying customer is not.
The winter months bring rain and wind, and although our houses are designed to try and keep the elements out, sometimes they need a little help. Leaks can be expensive. How has your house fared over the course of winter? Are there any repairs you need to look at doing in the dry months to prepare you better for next winter?
We have written a quick checklist to help you check your roof and gutters after winter.
1. Check for interior signs of leak damage.
Water marks on the ceiling or in the corners of bedrooms. Drips, mould, mildew or peeling paint can all be signs of a leak. If it is safe to do so, check your roof space which may reveal some damp insulation or a leak.
2. Check the roof surface for signs of damage or weathering.
Can you see tiles missing? Can you see sheets of metal that have been dented or are lifting? Are there any lifting or missing nails or screws? Check old repairs for damage or failure. Make sure there are no signs of leaks returning.
3. Check the rooftop for dirt or debris.
If your roof is covered in a lot of leaves and/or branches, you may need to schedule some tree maintenance.
4. Check spouting and guttering.
Do they need to be cleaned? Are they clogged? If there are lots of trees around, they will need to be cleaned more regularly. Blocked guttering and spouting stops water being directed away from the house.
5. Check the external components of your roof.
Chimneys, flues, range hoods, skylights, flues, and cowls. Anytime there is a penetration in the roof, the chances of it creating a leak increase.
If your house is showing any signs of roof leaks or you think it may need an inspection, we can perform a roof leak investigation or roof assessment. Contact us at 0800 HUGE LEAK or through our contact page.
*There are strict working at heights regulations in New Zealand and we do not encourage you to climb into or onto your roof without the necessary and proper safety equipment. We take safety seriously and uses a combination of harnesses and/or scaffolding to safely access rooftops.
Before choosing a home heating system, you should know the options you have. There are various kinds of home heating systems. There are many factors you should consider before deciding on a heating system for your home; such as budget, space, and household usage.
When assessing the budget aspect, remember to look at installation cost as well as the heating unit but also the running costs of the unit. The energy rating is  great guide in indicating the running costs.
You should assess your daily energy usage; this will help in choosing the most energy efficient heating system.
Some of these factors will eliminate certain brands/models which will hopefully help simplify your decision.
Types of Home Heating Systems
Central Heating
Central heating is a good option if you want to provide heating for your entire home. It gives you the liberty to control the heating temperature with a thermostat. You can also use a timer to restrict  the time for heating. It is really convenient and easy to use. Some central heating systems come with zone-control. You can use these zone-controls to control the temperature in different rooms of your home. A central heating system can be expensive, so it will be important to know the budget you want to stick to on a home heating system.
Electric Heaters
Electric heaters are cheap to buy but are expensive to run. They can consume a good amount of electricity. Comparatively electric heaters are much more expensive to run than other home heating systems. Electric heaters are good for small spaces or for using for short amounts of time. There are different kinds of electric heaters such as fan, convection, and radiant heaters.
Many electric heaters come with an in-built thermostat.
The heat output is less when you compare them to other available alternatives.
Wood Pellet Burners
Wood Pellet Burners are eco-friendly as they use pellets. These pellets are made from waste products which cause no harm to the environment and burn cleanly. Firewood cannot be used in these burners. Wood pellet burners are good for heating large areas such as lounge or living room. You can also use wood pellet burner to heat water in winters with the help of a wetback system.
Modern Wood Burners
These burners are cheap to run. If you can get cheap or free firewood, you can use it with modern wood burners. They are environment-friendly as they use renewable wood and can produce little pollution. The firewood must be dry and clean to be able to burn in the wood burner. For installing a modern wood burner, a building consent is needed. It is a good heating option for large spaces.
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps also produce heat instantly and run at low cost. They are convenient as you can control temperature with thermostat and also use the timer. While buying a heat pump, look at the Energy Rating Label to understand how much energy it will save.
Like any other heating option, it is important to assess your heating needs and consider things like the heat pumps will not work in power cuts.
Flued Gas Heaters or Fireplaces
Flued Gas Heaters use natural gas or LPG. Gas heating systems are convenient and fast and you can easily control them.
Gas heaters emit greenhouse gases and causes very little air pollution.
You will often be charged a fixed price for the gas and natural gas is usually cheaper than LPG. Some modern gas heaters need electricity; thus, they will not run during a power cut.
Unflued Gas Heaters
Unflued gas heaters are good as a backup for power cuts. These gas heaters do not use electricity to run. They are the most expensive compared to other home heating systems. Unflued gas heaters generate and pollute the air with toxic gases and so whilst using the unflued gas heater, at least one window must be opened.
