Master Plumbers Guarantee
Formed in 1901, The Master Plumbers is a national membership organisation which protects, and represents the plumbing, gasfitting, and drainlaying industry. The Master Plumbers Guarantee is for domestic buildings it protects Master Plumber Member clients from bad workmanship, or the business not completing the work. What is the Master Plumbers Guarantee?
When you hire a Master Plumber, Gasfitter or Drainlayer, you have the backing of the 12-month residential Master Plumbers Guarantee of up to $20,000 (incl. GST), protecting you in the unlikely event of substandard workmanship and loss of an advance payment to a contractor should they go into liquidation or bankruptcy.
If you’re unhappy with a service, invoice or charges you have received, the first step is always to contact the business owner. Let them know your concerns and give them at least five working days to get back to you.
How It Works
- Residential work only
- Work carried out by a member of Master Plumbers or one of their licensed plumbers, gasfitters or drainlayers
- Incomplete plumbing, gasfitting, or drainage work, up to the amount prepaid by the consumer
- The replacement (if necessary) of any product bought by the member from payment made by the consumer of up to a maximum of $5,000 (incl. GST)
The total coverage for all claims from any and all consumers due to a member’s liquidation or bankruptcy is up to a maximum of $20,000, (incl. GST) per member.
- Pricing / payment disputes, claims or unpaid contracts
- Faulty or defective products or any costs associated with these
- Products not purchased or supplied by the contracted member
- A claim where additional work, changes, or an attempt at remedial actions are carried out without the original contractor’s knowledge and consent
- Any claims that have already been filed with the Disputes Tribunal, a court, an insurance company, or under the Construction Contracts Act 2002
- Any occurrence that would normally be covered by the consumer’s insurance or the member’s liability insurance
- Claims related to difficulties in identifying the source of leaks, blockages, or similar issues. Roof leaks and blocked drains may require multiple attempts to fix and therefore are not included
- Other exclusions as specified in the Guarantee

What does the Master Plumbers Guarantee mean?
The Master Plumbers Guarantee covers the workmanship of your home for 12 months. It protects you from substandard work, and losing any advance payment if the company you hire goes into liquidation and/or bankruptcy. This guarantee ensures that if any deposit is paid for work to be completed, and the company was no longer in business, you should be able to get redress from the Master Plumbers Guarantee.
This means any deposit you pay us is protected if we are not longer able to continue in business.
Before you claim the Master Plumbers Guarantee
Before claiming the guarantee, it is mandatory to contact the member firm first. Southern has been around for around 40+ years and we stand by the work we do. Call us anytime if your not happy about anything.
Does your plumber have an external guarantor. It does not cost any more to use a master plumber and its always good to have someone independent to discuss things if you think your not getting what you want.
We are members of the Master Plumbers and each year have to submit a report of our compliance of their standards for safety and insurance to protect our customers.
We also have to have a proper complaints procedure in place and ensure all our service personnel have up to date licenses. They check to see we have access to the current plumbing standards on hand. We have plumbing standards on our cell phones now for most of them. Our plumbers regularly read the plumbers journal, which is a publication containing the latest information for our industry.

The Master Plumbers has a professional development program, we attend their courses and meetings to learn the latest developments and regulations.
The Master plumbers ensures we have all the right insurances and health and safety processes in place. They check we have the correct licenses and supervision policies and processes are being followed.

Manufacturers Warranty
Many larger items are covered by a manufacturer warranty and if a product fails within a period that is not reasonable we contact them to see if they will repair it or replace it.
Consumer Guarantee Act
Goods must last a reasonable time.
Building Act
This act contains duribility clauses relating to plumbing durability periods depending on where the plumbing is installed.
