Waste Disposal Wellington

We are Wellington Experts in supply and installation, or replacement waste disposers.

Our experts can install quality, quiet, powerful machines light duty or heavy duty. We can also install brutes for commercial use.

Why waste disposers fail and what is the solution to it?

Sometimes water leaks into the motor which might result in jamming or leaking. In some instances, the wrong food goes down and it winds around the rotor jamming it burning the motor out which is common, or the unit wears out.

It is usually cheaper to replace the waste disposer when this happens.

Repair or Replace

If the motor is burned out it is cheaper to replace them. If water has leaked into the motor it is game over as the electrics will be ruined.

Why Do People Remove Waste Disposers?

Some people remove disposers as they find it quicker to throw food scraps into the bin, or compost container, than down the drain. This is a cheaper alternative. In such a situation, we fit a stainless plate adapter to replace the large hole left by removing a unit. Then only a normal waste outlet in the sink.

Any food scraps going through a disposer will end up at the refuse dump after screening out and end up as compost.

There are several food scraps that will not go down waste disposers. Corn cobs, stringy foods such as celery, large quantities of stodgy food such as rice, fat, etc.

If you put fat down the waste will be blocked. If you put rice down you will be calling a plumber to unblock the waste. Celery will jam the blade and its cheaper to replace the disposer.

Process to limit blocked sinks

Operating Process
  • Make sure there is nothing in the waste hole.
  • Start the disposer,
  • Turn on the water,
  • and only then put food scraps down the disposer slowly.
  • Don’t put any fat in the disposer.
  • Don’t put down any foods that will likely bind the grinding plate.
  • When incorrect use blocks the sink, and waste pipes they can be hard to unblock, particularly in apartment blocks where we cannot get access to the outlet of the waste, and its all inside the wall, or in the ceiling of the apartment below.

Our experts work with special equipment to unblock wastes inside walls. Plunging often will not unblock them.

What can a home owner do if a waste disposer blocks?

You an put your hand down the waste disposer once you have turned off the power to them and pull out the ofending item eg a spoon. Or use a par of pliers to pull things out.

Some waste disposers have Allen key slot in the bottom of them to rotate them to get them moving but some times this does not work.

How long does it take to replace them?

This is a simple job and it takes approximately 1.75 to 2 hours in most cases. Some disposers are quieter than others, and are higher priced as a result.

There is a small amount of material needed to connect the disposer to the waste.

What If I have never had a Waste Disposer before, Can I add a disposer to my sink?

Yes you can add a disposer to a sink fairly simply if the sink has a waste hole adapter already ie the hole in the sink is big enough.  Most sink inserts come with one. If you have a standard old sink there is a punch we use to make this hole in the sink if there isn’t one. But this is rare these days.

One issue is the waste height under the sink it needs to be low enough so when the waste disposer is fitted it can connect to the waste with a fall. In rate cases we need to lower it which can be a challenge sometimes. Call us and we will send over someone to access it.

What are the features between one waste disposal and another?

  • The more expensive models have larger motors and are quieter. Some also have a remote button on the bench for operation.
  • Some have some stainless steel for less corrosion and longer life.
